Anaerobic Digestion
@ Aberdeen

Integrating waste into a
renewable energy network

The facility has been developed by Aberdeen City Council https://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/
at a site near The Event Complex Aberdeen (TECA) close to Aberdeen airport. It receives a range of wastes that would otherwise end up in landfill or polluting our countryside and turns it into valuable renewable energy using a technique called Anaerobic Digestion.

The site generates 100% renewable energy as gas which is used to meet its own energy demand, export gas to the grid and deliver gas to the TECA where heat and power is also needed. At TECA the ‘green’ gas can then also be used as an energy source for the hydrogen system to power city buses.

01.

What is Anaerobic Digestion?

Waste which is derived from natural material such as foodwaste, garden waste and agriculture can be broken down.
02.

Digestion Technology

The system uses a series of large tanks which are kept sealed and odour free. Inside the tanks, the material is gently stirred.

03.

Advantages

Safely treats material such as foodwaste to eliminate potential health hazards including food-poisoning microorganisms such as Salmonella etc.
